Turning A Bathroom Into A Bedroom

"The first thing we shopped for was that tub," says Chicago-based designer Julia Buckingham. "It's the crown jewel." Made of solid copper with nickel plating, it tends to maintain heat, "so by the time you fill it up, it hasn't already cooled down." And the graceful slipper shape seemed perfect for this elegant Victorian house in northwest Iowa.
Originally the owners were going to add a master suite, but then they looked up and realized that the third-floor attic, with its peaked roof and exposed beams, presented an unusual opportunity. Buckingham enlarged the windows and painted everything in Benjamin Moore's Chantilly Lace — "dead center between an off-white and a blue-white," she says. "It's the most beautiful backdrop because it feels like a color and not as though you just didn't want to deal with it."

A "rug" made out of tile balances the tub, "and you'll never need to dry-clean it." Instead of the usual crystal chandelier, Buckingham found a fixture draped with chains. "This is farm country, and it seemed more rustic and down to earth." Lavender towels were the finishing touch. "They bring a sophisticated femininity to the space and remind me of the wildflowers outside."
